Abstract

From Data Mining to Big Data Mining
A Brief Review of Theoretical Aspectsand Applications

Professor Dr. Gholamreza Nakhaeizadeh
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology andformer head of the Data Mining Research Department of Daimler-Benz, Germany

Very fast progress in computer technology and electronic data generation and data collection has led in the last years to the growth of very large databases in various scientific disciplines and industries. These huge amounts of data are potential resources containing valuable knowledge that has not been extracted, exhaustively, in many cases.Data Mining is a complex process providing different tools by which such knowledge can be extracted from data. These tools are based, among others,on statistical methods, machine learning approaches, database technology and visualization techniques.

On the other hand, it is estimated that in 2013 more than 2.3 billion people used the Internet. This huge number of participants in combination with the ever growing number of different services generates an unimaginable amount of data. International Data Corporations estimated in a study the overall volume of data generated in 2012 by 2.7 Zettabytes. These are samples for the situations in which the term “Big Data” comes into play. The terms like “Big Data Revolution“, “Big Data Analytics” and “Big Data Mining” are examples of the other hot topics which have been recently the subject of controversy discussions in the literature.Big Data Mining is the process of extracting useful knowledge from „big data”. In many situations “big data” resources contain also huge amount of text, image, video and audio data. In such cases “Big Data Mining” is a synonym for “Multi Media Mining”.

Historically, debating on Data Mining, in its current state, dates at least back to the end of eighties of the last century. Nowadays however Data Mining, Big Data Mining and Big Data Management belong to the essential components of modern Information Technology which is without a doubt indispensable for development in all areas.

The first part of this talk gives a brief overview, specially, on the recent development of Data Mining and its applications. The transition from Data Mining to Big Data Mining will be discussed in the second part.
